YOGA CLASSES

Things to bring: We have yoga mats and blocks, but bring your own yoga mat if you prefer, and a water bottle. We keep the downstairs fridge stocked with water ($1 donation). Wear comfortable workout/yoga clothes.

Things to know: Yoga should be practiced on an empty stomach. A good rule of thumb is to wait 2-3 hours after a meal, before practicing. If you must eat less than 2 hours before a class (to maintain blood sugar levels, etc.), a light natural snack is best.

Please come to class at least 5-10 minutes early to settle in, and be sure to turn off your cell phone.

"When I came to Nokomis Yoga, about six months ago or so, I was suffering from lower back pain which had been going on for several years. I am 58 years old and my job requires me to occasionally lift objects that weigh thirty to fifty pounds, and a back strain could take a month or two to recover from. I have found that doing Yoga Therapy with Solveig and attending Restorative Yoga classes at Nokomis Yoga have not only helped make my back feel stronger, but that recovering from a back strain now takes only a matter of days. I also feel that doing Yoga has made me more conscious of my body, how I treat it, and what I put into it. I am losing some weight and feeling better all around."

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga is an ancient yogic system kept a secret tradition of Raj Yoga in India until its code of secrecy was broken in the late 1960’s when Yogi Bhajan started teaching it publically in the West.

Kundalini Yoga is a remarkable system for keeping the entire body strong and balanced, particularly the nervous system and endocrine system, which become overtaxed in our constantly “tapped-in” society.

Its unique combination of physical asana, pranayam (breathing exercises), mantra and meditation are designed to work on specific body systems to help remove toxins, increase energy and vitality, relieve stress, anger, tension, emotional pain and support all aspects of the mind-body-spirit connection. Kundalini yoga also promotes a deep sense of inner-awareness and connection to help uncover the jewel that lies deep within each one of us.

"When you become calm and still, the universe starts moving for you." –Guru Dev Singh

Class meets on Thursdays from 7:15pm-8:45pm

Meditation

This weekly meditation group meets to practice mindfulness through sitting and walking meditation.

Many people find the practice of meditation helps them reduce stress and experience life more fully by paying attention to the present moment. Meditation helps to rest the body and calm the mind. Being in touch with the present moment allows us to end harmful habits of thinking and behavior and begin to change.

Each meditation session will begin with a brief guided meditation followed by sitting and walking meditation practice. There will be a short time in each session to ask questions and discuss your meditation experience. Meditators of any level are welcome.

"If we want to undo our own bewilderment and suffering and be of benefit to others and the planet, we're going to have to be responsible for learning what our mind is and how it works... Once we see how our mind works, we see how our life works, too. That changes us." Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche

Meditation meets on Sunday mornings from 9:15am-10:15am.

Restorative Yoga - Svaroopa® Style

In these classes, you will be doing poses in a series, working your body from the tailbone to the upper spine. Svaroopa® style yoga is not a vigorous, exercise style of yoga, but rather a deep restorative style that will open up your spine thereby relieving muscle pain and tension. This is a style of yoga that virtually every Body can do.

Our bodies start feeling more stiff as we age. Practicing restorative yoga will help to restore your body's suppleness and flexibility. Through the use of propping and alignment, your muscles are encouraged to release all of the built-up tension that has accumulated over the years.

Restorative Yoga is great for everyone and is particularly good if you have arthritis, back pain, repetitive stress syndrome, the aches and pains of aging or any time you feel achy, or stiff in your body. It is wonderful for anxiety and promotes stress reduction.

Class meets on Sundays at 4:30pm, Mondays at 5:30pm and 7:15pm(beginners) and on Wednesdays at 7:30pm. Women's Restorative meets on Fridays at 9:30am. All Restorative Yoga classes are one and one-half hours long.

Vinyasa Yoga (Sunday Morning Flow)

Vinyasa Yoga, Sunday Morning Flow, heals, detoxifies and exhilarates the body and mind with emphasis on movement, balance and intention.

We work to connect the body to the mind & spirit through steady movement and breath leaving you refreshed & energized.

Class meets on Sundays from 10:30am-11:45am

Vinyasa Yoga (Open Level - Tuesday and Wednesday class)

Each open level, Vinyasa (flow) class combines a theme, a fun soundtrack, humor, alignment emphasis, and Pranayama (breath control) with a dynamic series of asanas (postures) designed to systematically open the body for a joyful experience.

Class meets on Tuesdays 12:00-1:00pm, Tuesdays 7:15pm-8:30pm and on Wednesdays 4:30pm-5:30pm.

Vinyasa Yoga (Saturday Morning Flow)

Study the integration of breath & movement within a sequence of fluid postures. We will cultivate awareness of good alignment while exploring the nuance of prana in asana and pranayama.

Class meets seven Saturdays from 12:30pm-1:45pm from January 21- March 2nd then resumes its normal schedule, 12 noon to 1:15pm thereafter. See below, for a description of this seven week class with Nokomis Yoga instructor Myra Rucker teaching for Gabe.

Behind every pose there is a myth, a story with a lesson you can apply to the physical yoga practice - as well as to your life. For 7 weeks, explore the journey from myth to mat to life.

Emphasis will be placed on cultivating body awareness through alignment; connecting breath to movement; and finding deeper expressions through vinyasa krama (a step-by-step progression to a specific goal). Current and returning students may drop in, but are encouraged to attend all 7 classes. New students are welcome, but should contact instructor: ajoyfulpractice.wordpress.com/about/

Yoga Mini-Vacation

This yoga class is fun and mindful. We use our muscles in ways that release tension: both through stretches and poses that build strength. We take each person's physical challenges into consideration and modify poses when necessary.

Each person has his or her unique strengths and weaknesses. We are all strong in some areas, weak in others; flexible in certain joints and stiff in others. We tend to judge ourselves by our weaknesses but yoga gives us an opportunity to celebrate our strength and flexibility. It also provides us with a chance to gently and lovingly strengthen our bodies (minds and spirits) where they are weak, and encourage them to flexibility where they are tight.

The last few minutes are devoted to meditation so our bodies can fully integrate the benefits of the class just past. We look forward to meeting you.

Class meets on Thursdays from 1:30pm-3:00pm
